From the mind of Ben Berman ("The Tim & Eric Show" and "Comedy Bang! Bang!"), comes I'm a Mitzvah—this genuine dramatic comedy about David, who comes to Mexico to bring his friend's dead body back to the States, and winds up getting stranded for a night with the body. Together with his close friend, he makes their last night in Mexico a memorable one.
Josh Cohen co-wrote the film in addition to playing the dead version of himself.
David is played by "Parks and Recreations" star Ben Schwartz. Schwartz was approached to do the film after working with Berman briefly on "Comedy Bang! Bang!" for IFC network. Berman has worked along side of Tim & Eric, Jon Benjamin, Zach Galifianakis, Scott Aukerman, and Will Oldham.
I'm a Mitzvah is Berman's first work to take on a more serious tone, but still finds light to let his humor shine through. Berman sought funding for the project through Kickstarter and was a quick success—reaching his goal in just 10 days.
I'm a Mitzvah was an official selection at Sundance Film Festival and received an Honorable Mention for Best Narrative Short at our own Nashville Film Festival. It will also be screening at Sundance Sunset Cinemas Aug 8-14th.
This fall, Schwartz will appear alongside Tina Fey and Jason Bateman's in the upcoming dramatic comedy "This is Where I Leave You," as the family's young, modern rabbi.
